Tamahere Equine Hub Proposal Advances to Next Fast-track Stage Media Slide

The proposed Waikato Thoroughbred Racing Greenfield Racing Hub at Pencarrow Road, Tamahere, has reached an important milestone after the Minister for Infrastructure accepted the project's referral application into the Government's Fast-track approvals process. While the decision allows the proposed Equine Hub to move to the next stage of assessment, it does not constitute approval for the development.

Waikato Thoroughbred Racing Chair Bruce Harvey welcomes the decision, saying, "We are pleased that the Minister has recognised the potential regional and national benefits of this proposal and has agreed that it should proceed through the Fast-track process." He emphasised that, "This is an important step, but it is only one step. There is still a considerable amount of work ahead before any approvals are granted." WTR will now prepare its substantive application, which is expected to be lodged in early October and will include detailed planning, environmental, transport, infrastructure and community information.

Bruce Harvey says community engagement will continue throughout the next phase, with ongoing discussions involving iwi, neighbouring landowners, local authorities, community groups and the existing Neighbours Liaison Group. He said WTR remained committed to ensuring people were informed and had opportunities to participate as the proposal progressed. Once the substantive application is lodged, it will be assessed by an independent expert panel before any final decisions are made.
