Planning & Development

The proposed Waikato Thoroughbred Racing (WTR) Equine Hub remains one of the most significant developments under consideration for the Tamahere area.

The project would bring together the Waikato, Cambridge and Te Awamutu racing clubs into a single purpose-built racing, training and equine events facility on approximately 160 hectares of land between the Waikato Expressway and Hooker Road, near Duncan and Pencarrow Roads.

Supporters believe the development would strengthen New Zealand's thoroughbred industry and create a modern regional facility. Others are asking what such a large project could mean for Tamahere's rural character, environment and future growth.

Why This Matters

If approved, the proposal has the potential to reshape part of the southern Tamahere landscape for decades to come.

The development would include racing and training facilities together with supporting infrastructure designed to operate as a year-round equine and events venue.

Funding is expected to come largely from the sale and redevelopment of existing racing assets, including the Te Rapa Racecourse.

Questions Being Asked

Residents have identified a number of important issues they would like addressed before any decisions are made.

These include:

  • How will local traffic be affected?

  • What impact could the development have on nearby properties?

  • How will noise and lighting be managed?

  • What environmental protections will be in place?

  • Will Tamahere's rural character be preserved?

  • What economic benefits will flow to the wider community?

  • How will local residents continue to be involved as the project progresses?

These are all reasonable questions for a development of this scale and significance.

Community Consultation

Waikato Thoroughbred Racing has committed to engaging directly with the community throughout the planning process.

An Open Letter released ahead of the Tamahere Community Open Day stated that WTR is committed to open and transparent consultation and welcomed the opportunity to answer questions from residents.

Representatives attended the Community Open Day to discuss:

  • The proposed development and timing

  • Traffic and transport planning

  • Environmental assessments

  • Economic opportunities

  • Ongoing community consultation

The Community Committee welcomed the opportunity for residents to engage directly with project representatives and ask questions about the proposal.

A Project of Regional Significance

Waikato District Mayor Aksel Bech has previously described the proposal as being of regional significance because of its strategic location near the Waikato Expressway, Hamilton Airport and the Southern Links transport corridor.

Supporters see opportunities for investment, employment and improved regional infrastructure.

At the same time, many residents believe developments of this scale must also protect Tamahere's unique rural-residential character and ensure local communities continue to have a meaningful voice throughout the planning process.

The Conversation Continues

The proposed Equine Hub remains under development, with further planning, technical investigations and consultation expected.

The Tamahere Community Forum will continue to provide updates as new information becomes available and encourages residents to stay informed and participate constructively in the discussion.

Good community outcomes are achieved when people have access to information, ask informed questions and remain engaged throughout the decision-making process.
