What Should Tamahere Look Like for Our Grandchildren?

Most of us will never see Tamahere in 2075. But the decisions we make today about growth, roads, green space, community facilities and the character of the place we call home will help determine what our children and grandchildren eventually inherit. That is the thinking behind Vision Tamahere 2075 and the new Community Plan now being developed by the Tamahere Community Committee and while considerable consultation has already taken place, there is still time for residents to have their say.

TCC Chair Charles Fletcher says the Community Plan subcommittee has canvassed community views over the past eight months and is now bringing that work together. Importantly, the conversation is also extending beyond Tamahere. "Because of the implications for Matangi and Tauwhare, I have invited them to become involved so we can focus on a Council outcome which works across all three communities," Charles Fletcher says. Growth from Hamilton City and Cambridge/Hautapu is increasingly placing pressure on these rural, country-living and village environments, including local roads and infrastructure.

Previous Vision Tamahere 2075 consultation, via our Open Days, has revealed residents are not opposed to change, but want growth managed in a way that protects the area's rural-residential character, environment and sense of community. The new plan is intended to turn those aspirations into something Council can act upon. The aim is to deliver it during October, allowing Waikato District Council to consider it ahead of its February 2027 deliberations on the LTP (Long Term Plan) update. Input is therefore still needed now - all comments received will be collated and contribute to the continuing dialogue.

We may be planting a tree whose mature shade we will never sit beneath, but someone has to plant it. Long-term planning asks us to think beyond what Tamahere needs today and imagine what kind of community we want future generations to inherit. What should be protected? What should change?
