The biggest change to New Zealand local government since 1989 is now being considered, and its outcome could shape how communities like Tamahere are represented for decades to come.
Central Government's Simplifying Local Government programme (Local Government Reform) is exploring the creation of larger Unitary Councils that would combine the functions of regional and district councils into a single organisation. Waikato District Council is currently seeking community feedback before deciding whether to put forward its own proposal through the Government's voluntary "Head Start" process. Importantly, no decisions have been made, and several options remain under discussion.
For Tamahere residents, this discussion goes well beyond council boundaries. It raises important questions about local representation, community identity, infrastructure investment and the future of local decision-making. While larger councils may promise greater efficiency and reduced duplication, many residents are asking how local voices will continue to be heard within a much larger governance structure.
As part of this discussion, the Tamahere Community Committee has prepared a series of questions for Waikato District Mayor Aksel Bech. We invite you to consider these questions and add your own thoughts through the Forum discussion below.
Questions We Are Asking
1. Local Voice
How can residents be assured communities such as Tamahere, Matangi and Tauwhare will retain a meaningful local voice if council structures are consolidated or merged?
2. Representation
What specific safeguards would you support to ensure local representation is not diluted under any future governance arrangements?
3. Rates and Affordability
One of the drivers behind reform is improving efficiency and affordability. How confident are you that these changes will actually reduce costs for ratepayers?
4. Decision-Making
What decisions affecting Tamahere should always remain local, regardless of any future regional governance model?
5. Growth Pressures
Tamahere continues to experience significant growth. How would proposed reforms affect planning, infrastructure investment and community development in our area?
6. Community Identity
How can Waikato District preserve the unique identity and character of communities such as Tamahere while pursuing greater regional collaboration?
7. The Future Vision
Looking ten years ahead, what does success look like for Waikato District under a reformed local government system?
