Tamahere-Woodlands Ward Councillors Crystal Beavis and Mike Keir say Waikato District Council has entered one of the most significant periods of change in recent years, with local government reform, major development projects and infrastructure planning all gathering pace.
Their June update highlights several important issues that will affect residents across Tamahere, Matangi, Gordonton and the wider Waikato District.
Local Government Reform Underway
The Government's Simplifying Local Government programme is now underway, with councils across New Zealand considering whether to voluntarily propose new governance structures before the 9 August 2026 deadline.
One option currently being explored is the creation of a Waikato-wide unitary authority, bringing together Waikato District Council, Hamilton City Council and potentially other neighbouring councils into a single organisation.
If councils do not reach agreement before the deadline, the Government may ultimately determine the future structure itself.
For residents, these decisions could influence how local services are delivered, how rates are managed and how communities like Tamahere are represented in the future.
Growth Across the Ward
The Councillors also report that a number of significant projects are progressing across the ward under the Government's Fast-track Approvals Act.
These include:
Hamilton Southern Links
Waikato Thoroughbred Racing Hub (Tamahere)
Greenhill Industrial
Gordonton Country Estate
Awanui Links
Growth around Ruakura and Tauwhare
Under the Fast-track process, opportunities for public submissions are considerably reduced, with councils primarily providing technical advice during the assessment process.
Other Updates
Residents are also encouraged to stay informed about several important local matters:
Road Corridor BylawFeedback is being sought on a proposed bylaw covering matters such as vehicle crossings, livestock movements, parking, berm maintenance and utility works within the road corridor.
IAWAI Water Services From 1 July, drinking water and wastewater services transfer to the new IAWAI organisation, with water charges appearing separately alongside council rates.
Fieldays Traffic Management Temporary traffic changes during Fieldays include a no right turn from Raynes Road onto Airport Road during morning peak periods. Residents are encouraged to plan alternative travel routes.
Community Recognition Congratulations to the Hukanui Playground in Gordonton, which has been named a finalist in the 2026 Recreation Aotearoa Parks Awards.
Stay Informed
Councillors Crystal Beavis and Mike Keir continue to provide regular updates on issues affecting the Tamahere-Woodlands Ward.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed, participate in local consultations and share their views on the decisions that will help shape the future of our community.
