Tamahere is entering a defining period, with several major infrastructure and land-use decisions converging at once. To help shape a clear, community-led response, the Tamahere Community Committee and Waikato District Council are hosting a Community Open Day on Saturday 31 January 2026, from 3:00 to 7:00 pm, at the Tamahere Community Centre on Devine Road. This will be family-friendly, designed to encourage open, constructive conversation, the BBQ facilities and surrounding fields are available for picnic and play
The Open Day seeks options for the use and development of the Tamahere Reserve, gives you information about the proposed Tamahere Racecourse and equine development, Southern Links and other big picture issues including how to make something significant at the Maniapoto Pa site.
It is also a key step in developing Vision Tamahere 2075, the Community’s long-term plan to guide growth and infrastructure over the next 50 years.
At the centre of current discussion is how these projects intersect. The proposed 150-hectare greenfield equine development, the long-planned Southern Links expressway link between SH1 and SH3, potential use of the sand extraction site, all raise important questions around Tamahere traffic volumes, event-day movements, freight access, expressway connections, and long-term impacts on Tamahere’s character and liveability. The existing Tamahere expressway interchange is already under pressure, and the community is keen to avoid a repeat of the disruption experienced during and post construction of the Hamilton Expressway Bypass. Coordinated planning between Waikato District Council and NZTA Waka Kotahi will be essential, with Councillor Mike Keir recognised as a key advocate for ensuring community voices are reflected in future roading decisions.
The Open Day offers residents direct contributions to Vision Tamahere 2075. The Committee is listening to all suggestions. It has divided Tamahere into four zones to better access pressures, opportunities and limits, as it seeks “blue-sky” ideas for the future for each part of Tamahere. This is your opportunity to share your ideas for Tamahere and its surrounds. Tell us what you want.
The Tamahere Reserve consultation is important. Waikato Thoroughbred Racing will share their ideas and plan and embrace your feedback on the equine hub development. NZTA Waka Kotahi is developing construction plans for Southern Links - what do you want to know? Community engagement now is vital. Tamahere’s future is being shaped now and this is the moment to be part of the conversation.
