Is Tamahere Getting Its Fair Share? Resetting the Blueprint for Our Future - TCC Meeting

The well attended meeting threw the spotlight on local priorities at the latest meeting, especially when it comes to the stark mismatch between what Tamahere pays and what Tamahere gets.

$125 million in rates over 9 years. Just $480,000 allocated.
That’s the current forecast for Tamahere alone in the Waikato District Council’s Long Term Plan (LTP) 2025–34. Only $480k is tagged for spending in our area during the next two years.

In response, the TCC has begun a full-scale refresh of the Tamahere Blueprint Plan, which defines the community’s future goals and ensures they’re front and centre in Council planning.

“This is a critical moment,” says Chair Charles Fletcher. “If we don’t define and demand what matters to Tamahere, we risk being overlooked again.”

A Call for Community Involvement
A planning workshop is being set up, and the Committee is inviting public input to help define future priorities, from infrastructure and green space to local economy and youth services.

Locals can expect a survey via Tamahere Forum soon, alongside details of the public session.

More Hot Topics arising from the Meeting

  • Water CCO Concerns: The creation of IAWAI Flowing Waters Ltd, a new Council-Controlled Organisation (CCO), raised red flags. Will residents collecting their own water still be charged? How much control will WDC have over this $3.6 billion entity? TCC will continue to monitor closely.

  • Matangi Spending Debate. The WDC has allocated $380k for new netball courts in Matangi, despite local concerns about public access, poor maintenance of existing facilities, and a lack of benefit to wider ratepayers. TCC will lodge a formal submission before the 14 July deadline.

  • Tamahere Reserve Redesignation. With the “quarry” designation finally being reviewed, the Reserve is opening for community reimagination. Locals are urged to help shape its future use, potentially as an educational and ecological hub.

  • CCTV Greenlight. Despite long delays, the security camera plan for the village centre is moving forward. A new 6m pole design aims to prevent vandalism.
